Lisenby Elementary School 5th Grade students were given a writing assignment on the topic of Veteran's Day. Rachel Buchanan earned first place on the assignment.
A Hero's Freedom
Strong and free,
it's the way I want to be.
Bright like the sun,
We're number one.
Great like the land,
Oh isn't it grand.
Fighting for freedom.
Fighting for land.
Fighting for rights.
Too much!
Buildings crashing!
Planes smashing!
But we are protected,
We won't get infected.
There's so much to learn.
The wrongs and the rights.
It's hard when there's so many fights.
But all for a good cause.
Other countries come to war,
But we are the only ones to score.
A hero to me is a hero to you.
They know exactly what to do.
To all the veterans and heroes out there

P.S. A hero is always out there, you just have to know where to look.

Lisenby 5th grade students in Ms. Bethel Terry's class enjoyed a special visit from U.S. Air Force Veteran, Retired Staff Sergeant Rufus Hawthorne. " Grandpa Rufus" , as known by the students, is the foster grandparent for Lisenby School. Grandpa Rufus shared some of his recollections from the Air Force with the students as part of Veteran's Day activities at Lisenby. Students wrote cards and letters to thank him for his duty and protecting their freedom. Pictured are several Lisenby 5th graders with Grandpa Rufus.
